FINOPS · BUDGETS AND ALERTS

Know before the bill does.

Set a monthly budget for each cloud account, see when the month is on track to go over, and get told in email, Slack, Teams or a webhook when spend jumps.

Budgets, alerts and anomaly detection on Pro

The usual way

The surprise arrives with the invoice.

Spend is checked once a month, after it is spent.
A forgotten instance runs for weeks before anyone notices.
Alerts go to an inbox nobody reads.
Budgets live in a spreadsheet, in a different currency from the bill.

How it works

Budget, watch, alert

01

Budget per account

Set a monthly budget in the currency of that account’s own bill. The 80% and 100% alert thresholds are selected by default.

AWS · shop-staging

Monthly budget · $250.00 USD from the bill

Alert at 80% · $200.00

Example data.

02

Watch the month

Spend this month sums daily costs from the latest completed scan. A projection shows where the month is heading.

September · day 12

$142.50 so far → $356.25 projected

Example data.

03

Alert where you work

Choose email, Slack, Microsoft Teams or a webhook for breaches. Rules are checked hourly against the latest completed cost reports.

Month outlook

Will this month go over?

Try a budget and a month-to-date spend. The projection divides spend by elapsed days and multiplies it by the number of days in the month. It uses the latest completed cost scan; AWS Cost Explorer usually reports a day later.

Alert rules

Five kinds of alert

Make a rule with a name, alert type, metric, condition, threshold and notifications. Choose whether it also appears in the in-app feed, then enable it. Switch types to see the metrics each rule can use.

Available metrics

Daily spend · Monthly spend · Latest day against the preceding seven days

Daily spend over $50

Daily spend · Greater than · $50

Notifications · in-app feed · enabled

Notification channels

Alerts where your team works

Add a channel from the budget form, then choose it for budget breaches. Email, Slack, Microsoft Teams and webhooks are supported. A channel can also be the fallback for other notifications. Slack, Teams and webhook URLs are stored encrypted and are never shown again.

Frequently asked questions

The currency comes from the account’s own bill, so spend and budget use the same unit.
